At the website of Nordland Theatre the following, among other things, is written about The Birds:

"Mattis sees omens in the world surrounding him. But are they good or bad? One night, a woodcock starts flying over their house. Mattis knows the bird language. Outside of the house, two dry aspen trees stand. People call them Hege and Mattis. One day, lighting strikes one of them down. Is it her or him? He poses questions the people around him shield away from. Why? Why should the bird have to die?

Tarjei Vesaas poses the useful and sustainable against the mythical and poetic in The Birds. We need to balance this relationship to be whole as human beings."
