As part of his thesis at The National Academy of Craft and Art Industry, Bård Lie Thorbjørnsen in 2000-2001 was assigned the responsibility for the stage design for three theatre productions: The Glass Menagerie at The National Academy of Theatre, The Belgrade Trilogy at The Norwegian Theatre and Mother Courage at Trøndelag Theatre.
Bård Thorbjørnsen was nominated for The Hedda Award 2002 in the best visual design category for his stage design for Mother Courage at Trøndelag Theatre. The production was also nominated for The Hedda Award 2002 in best production category
Among his other projects are Undset, a project in collaboration between The Norwegian Touring Theatre and The National Theatre (2002), and The Dance of Death at Hålogaland Theatre (2003). The autumn of 2003 he made the stage design for yet another great success: Songs of the Beehive at The Norwegian Theatre.
More recent projects can be read about at the webpage of Thorbjørnsen, http://scenografen.com/.
Bård Lie Thorbjørnsen was again nominated for The Hedda Award in 2003 in the best visual design category for his stage design for The Dance of Death by Hålogaland Theatre.
Bård Lie Thorbjørnsen won The Hedda Award 2014 in the best stage design/costume design category for his costume design and stage design for The Visit by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, directed by Tyra Tønnessen, produced by Trøndelag Theatre.
The Hedda Jury gave the following reason:
"Henrik Ibsen's detailed stage directions testify that one of the foremost playwrights in the world knew that on a theatre stage the things, too, speak to us. Sometimes they confide us more than what the lines are able to tell us.
The recipient of the best costume design and stage design award proves that casting roles and creating an environment within which the action may take place at its best is about engaging the objects in dialogue. The winner lets the costume design and stage design breathe life into the action, through letting them reveal and hint at underlying, hidden motives - and as such, contributing to drive the performance forward.
This year's best stage design/costume design award goes to Bård Lie Thorbjørnsen."
Bård Lie Thorbjørnsen won The Hedda Award 2015 in the best stage design/costume design category for his work with When we dead awaken for Trøndelag Theatre in 2014.
The Hedda Jury gave the following reason:
"The stage design is to contribute to supporting the content of the production, and to create the necessary illusion. It is particularly good when it is a little work of art in itself, an innovative and visual experience. This year's award winner has done this in full through creating an enormous, content-rich and continuously surprising landscape using the whole stage room to visualise and underline the action of the play, and in which, in the final, an illusion that is as dramatic as it is surprising is created.
This year's best stage design award goes to Bård Lie Thorbjørnsen."
