Come freedom, come - Fridom

Nanzikambe Theatre Arts, Malawi, visited The Open Theatre (Det Åpne Teater) and The Ibsen Festival with Come freedom, come/Fridom*; a double-bill production providing different reflections over being free, from the robbing of basal needs and rights in the text Come freedom, come by Smith Likongwe to the more subtle restrictions of personal room in the love affair in Freedom by Jon Fosse. The production was the first time Fosse was produced in Africa. Melissa Eveleigh directed.

*Nanzikambe Theatre Arts used the New Norwegian title Fridom, rather than the English-language Freedom, for Fosse's play also in English-language use.

Come freedom/come/Fridom* had a strong musical character, with songs and drums inspired by protest singers and the rhythms filling the streets of Malawi during the change to a multiple party system at the beginning of the 1990es. Nanzikambe Theatre Arts wanted to display what developed in Malawi at the time of the performance, when the company experienced that the political leaders appeared increasingly similar to the leaders during the dictatorship.

"Ibsen International Short Text Challenge 2006 has given us the opportunity to deliver a strongly satirical comment to what we experience is about to happen in Malawi and to protest the development" Melissa Eveleigh, artistic director Nanzikambe Theatre Arts, said.
