Freedom
Freedom by Jon Fosse is a short text written on request by The Open Theatre (Det Åpne Teater) due to the Ibsen celebration The Ibsen Year 2006, inspired or provoked by Ibsen's reflections on individual freedom. The original title in Norwegian is Fridom.
Freedom had its world premiere in Nanzikambe, Malawi, in August 2006, and became the first play by Jon Fosse to be performed in Africa.
Its Norwegian premiere took place at The Open Theatre (Det Åpne Teatret) September 9 2007, as part of the theatre's Ibsen International Short Text Challenge.
It was first published by Transit forlag in the book Frihet som livsbetingelse (literally: Freedom as a condition for life) in 2006. Later it was published in the Fosse collection Kortare Stykke (literally, Shorter Plays, 2011) by Det Norske Samlaget.
