Meet Janus, an ordinary lower secondary school pupil leading an ordinary school daily life. But what is ordinary, what is imagination and what is fact? We defend our honour facing our surroundings and we ask the questions:
Don't we have to defend our honour facing ourselves?
Integrity – is that the same as sticking to your opinion no matter what?
Decency – is that the same as never doing anything wrong? Or is it to stand responsible for the wrongdoing one has done?
Does anxiety mean one has to change? Can one change? Is a human after all the sum of every action it has made? Or do the motives matter too?
With Before the Bell, written by Liv Heløe, Brageteatret wanted to present a performance about self-respect, independence and courage to believe in one's own choices.
Before the Bell by Brageteatret was part of the project PLATFORM 11+, a European collaboration between 12 countries and 14 theatres, in which the aim was to spend four years developing new performing arts directed towards a target group aged 11 to 16 years. The project was supported by the European Union’s culture programme Education and Culture DG and was led by Brageteatret.
Before the Bell won The Hedda Award in the category of best production for children and youth in 2010. The jury reasoned as follows:
"All institutional theatres have obligations to play theatre for children and youth. And they do. But only too seldom do they dare to make new productions reflecting the lives of children and youth. The more happy one can be that such productions still exist - and they do thanks to; an artistic director who stakes his honour upon giving the audience a meaningful option; a gifted playwright working ambitiously to discuss issues the young are concerned with, and to find the right voice in describing young life; a sensible, artistically innovative director with a liberating ironic distance to all sentimentality, and a bunch of eager, charismatic and great young actors doing the text justice. The award goes to Liv Heløe's Before the Bell at Brageteatret, directed by Cecilie Mosli."
