"- The first question I asked myself was: Why does she send her son away like this? What drives her to such a sacrifice? Something terrible must have happened for her to make such a choice. All of a sudden I understood why, says Moum Aune.
The answer she found with Oswald as he remembered how his father took him in his lap and forced him to smoke a pipe, something that led the boy to cry and throw up.
- Ibsen was very concerned with science, and because of this I think he knew that syphilis is not inherited. The syphilis was transferred sexually to Oswald from his father. This is a way to read it one can't get past. As we started working on it, we discovered that everything fit. It is like a math assignment finding its answer, Moum Aune says, and that is also why Ibsen's day reacted so strongly.
- The bourgeois spirit of the day was like in a dictatorship - people became experts in reading between the lines. Because of this they reacted spontaneously and with disgust. I think they understood the references to incest, but that later times have tried to cover it up."
