Folketeateret is located in a building with a long theatre tradition. The building, next to Youngstorget in Oslo, was completed in 1935, and first housed a cinema from 1935 to 1952, next the private theatre Folketeatret (spelled without the third e) from 1952 to 1959 (the theatre became part of Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theatre) from 1959), and then The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet from 1959 to 2007. From time to time Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theatre) also used the building for performances after the opera had been established and had moved in.
A major renovation took place before Folketeateret again became a private theatre.
Folketeateret was officially opened the opening night of Mamma Mia! - March 19 2009. Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson did the official opening.
