Binnabánnaš
The little reindeer Binnabánnaš (“tiny” in the Sámi language) was created so that children in the Sápmi region could watch a TV puppet similar to Fantorangen. The puppet was first shown in 2018, and was featured on national television every weekday as part of the Sámi children’s television programme Mánáid-TV. Mona Solbakk, the head of programming for NRK Sápmi, said that the figure quickly became popular with both children and adults.
Binnabánnaš is much more than a sweet character that makes links between different cartoon series. The puppet is also becoming an important guardian of the Sámi language(s), and already speaks Northern Sámi, Eastern Sámi and Inari Sámi. It is also learning Lule Sámi and Southern Sámi.
Binnabánnaš was designed and made by Rune Røsting and Christina Espedal. The process was facilitated by the children’s division of NRK, NRK Super.

Binnabánnaš has a mouth that can open and close, and eyes like a giraffe’s, made of glass to resemble real eyes. He has one small and one larger horn because of an injury. The head and body parts are made of foam rubber and covered with wool fleece. The arms and feet/front legs are controlled by rods.
Binnabánnaš has grey "fur" with beige patches on the face and body.

The TV puppet’s mouth and neck have a large range of motion. The arms/forelegs and legs/rear legs are controlled by thin rods. More than one performer is needed in order to take advantage of all the motion possibilities. There are several versions of Binnabánnaš constructed in different ways.
