Gilli

Gilli was a researcher, one of the characters in the television series Kometkameratene ("The comet comrades"), which was about nine aliens who are on their way to Earth in a spaceship. Their mission was to find out what people on Earth spend their time doing.

Kometkameratene was created by the Swedish company BLA (Stockholm), in collaboration with NRK’s children’s television division NRK Super. BLA has specialised in puppet theatre for television. BLA was responsible for the concept, script, direction and for the construction of the puppets. Petter Lennstrand from BLA was responsible for the concept and directed the production.

In total, 48 episodes of Kometkameratene were produced between 2008 and 2011.

More

Six "adult" and three young aliens (Rampejentene; "The rascal girls") were on their way to Earth in a spaceship. In each episode, two aliens were sent to Earth to investigate a human activity. They would explore the activity and communicate with humans before returning to their spaceship in order to discuss their findings with their colleagues, who would try to understand what the two emissaries had experienced.

Gilli carried out research on the spaceship and on Earth. He often travelled to Earth to speak to children, to ask them to explain different human activities and actions.

Gilli was performed by Ole Jacob Lindberg

Types of materiale

Gilli had masses of orange, fluffy and bushy fur (faux fur), which covered its head and the two giant ears, parts of the neck, hands and forearms. The rest of the body (upper body and upper arms) was clothed in a striking violet colour, made of a synthetic material.

The body was made of pieces of foam rubber.

Construction/technique

Most of the puppets in Kometkameratene were constructed as muppets, meaning that they had a large, movable mouth that the performer controlled with one hand. Gilli was a cross between a muppet and a human-arm puppet. The latter has one hand that is the performer’s own hand, camouflaged and made to look like the puppet’s. In such puppets (as for Gilli), the mouth is controlled by one hand while the other hand (right or left, sometimes alternating) controlled one of the puppet’s hands.

The forearm and the hand on Gilli were disproportionately large, and the bright orange colour emphasised the size and the movements. The puppet was constructed to be controlled by one performer. Two performers were necessary if the puppet needed to move both arms/hands at the same time.
