Mook

Mook was one of the characters in the television series Kometkameratene ("The comet comrades"), which was about nine aliens who are on their way to Earth in a spaceship. Their mission was to find out what people on Earth spend their time doing.

Kometkameratene was created by the Swedish company BLA (Stockholm), in collaboration with NRK’s children’s television division NRK Super. BLA has specialised in puppet theatre for television.

BLA was responsible for the concept, script, direction and for the construction of the puppets. Petter Lennstrand from BLA was responsible for the concept and directed the production.

In total, 48 episodes of Kometkameratene were produced between 2008 and 2011.

More

The crew on the spaceship comprised six "adult" and three young aliens (Rampejentene; "The rascal girls"). In each episode, two aliens were sent to Earth to investigate a human activity. They would explore the activity and communicate with humans before returning to their spaceship in order to discuss their findings with their colleagues, who would try to understand what the two emissaries had experienced.

Mook was the spaceship’s mechanic, and he often had to help Captain Lu to fix the door that led to the ship’s control centre.

Mook was performed by puppeteer Aslag Guttomsgaard.

Types of materiale

Mook’s head, neck and hands were made of a long-haired faux fur in a deep burgundy colour. The body and upper arms were covered in a beige material. All materials were synthetic.

Mook has well-defined eyes with movable eyelids, orange lashes and a long, thin, red nose that is slightly crooked. There are two long, thin "antennae" that stick up from the top of the head. The two large hands are a dominating feature, and these, along with the mouth, are the puppet’s primary means of expression.

The body and upper arms are long and thin.

Construction/technique

Mook is a cross between a muppet and a human-arm puppet. A muppet has a large mouth that can open and close, controlled by one of the puppeteer’s hands.

A human-arm puppet uses one of the performer’s hands as the puppet’s hand. The puppet can therefore take hold of objects and make precise movements. With a puppet that is both a muppet and a human-arm puppet, there are many possibilities for expression.

It is easy to "overplay" this type of television puppet, and often the principle "less is more" is appropriate.
