"The aging king Lear wants to retire. At the same time, he wants to keep his power. He wants to leave responsibility and everything he owns to his three daughters. To have their part of the inheritance, the daughters just have to tell their father how much they love him. The two eldest flatter him to win his favour. Cordelia, the youngest, and her father's favourite, is honest and doesn't want to praise her father for the sake of her own advantage. Her punishment is being denied her inheritance.
The transfer of power also leads to other problems. Lear is unable to see that he no longer is capable of taking care of his kingdom, even less himself. He is already less than he used to be, his mind fails him and he breaks down without realising it.
(...)
In this version of King Lear, director Tatu Hämäläinen wants to deal with aging, and he sees the play as an image of growing old and the consequences it may have. We all have to leave our kingdoms, our workplaces, our positions and our histories to become something else. Lear wants what many soon-to-be retirees want in leaving their work: No responsibility, just enjoying life. The fear of being dependent of others marks Lear's decisions. He feels betrayed by the world when his will doesn't go through. To have one's authority challenged can be difficult, to be put aside due to age can be unbearable."
