"The twins are born as girls, but one of them is a boy. The family is unable to see Sebastian for who he is, and he leaves them. His twin sister Viola fears that something terrible will happen, and she goes after him. She is shipwrecked in Illyria, her twin brother's inner world, and here, she gets to know the one she believed was so much like herself.
Director Frode Gjerløw has made a modern story based on familiar Shakespeare classics. At all levels, there are gender complications: A woman plays a man born as woman. A woman plays a woman who camouflages as a man. A woman plays a man who uses force against women, and a man plays a woman who is suppressed by men. All of this is good and well in the spirit of Shakespeare."
