"Lars Norén is a master of depiction the dysfunctional family. In The Leaves of Vallombrosa, he observes his contemporary day with humorous gloominess.
A family of four generations meet in a summer house by the ocean. The aging patriarch is ill, and they don' know how long he's got left. The house is to be sold, and this might be the last summer. Beneath the idyllic summer light, years of repressed feelings simmer. The siblings disagree, relationships of love and relations between siblings are ailing. At the beach, birds die in an oilspill. The family's attempts at jovial conversations soon drown in etching sarcasm and hurtful accusations. They all long to be somewhere else.

In Lars Norén's text, tragedy is expressed through the comical, in the language and in the helplessly stuck persons, lying to themselves and to others. The characters are homeless in their own lives, but still cling to the hope that there exists something better and more authentic. In New York, or Toscana, in a small town or with a young, beautiful actress. The central issues are involved; life, love and art, with clear parallels to Chekhov's The Seagull and The Cherry Orchard, and to Strindberg's drama. The title of the play was found in John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost.

Lars Norén is one of the foremost contemporary Nordic playwrights, and has written more than 70 plays, plus poetry and novels. The Leaves of Vallombrosa was written for (Sweden's public broadcaster, Sceneweb's comment) SVT Drama in the early 1990es, and has been performed at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm and at The National Stage in Bergen, among other places. The Norwegian Theatre was established as a Norén theatre early on, and has produced many of his plays, including The Last Supper, And Give Us the Shadows, Time is Our Home, Human Circle 3:1, Lys* (Light) and Chaos is the Neighbour of God. He personally staged November.
Director Alan Lucien Øyen has experience as a playwright, director and choreographer. This is his first assignment as a director at The Norwegian Theatre."
