At the website of The National Theatre, the following, among other things, is written about Brand:

"Brand has an unchangeable idea that the human can surpass all, but that it doesn't take advantage of one's enormous potential. He wants to rebuild human greatness on earth, but if greatness is to be achieved, the human needs to have faith in its own possibilities. When Brand returns to his hometown, he realises that he has to start his struggle where he came from- closest to himself. His lack of compromise is devastating, and it turns out that his convictions fall short when idea meets reality.

Brand is one of Henrik Ibsen's major epic dramas, written 150 years ago this year. In the adaptation by the German director, theatre manager and writer Armin Petras' the action and the role gallery has been stripped down. The language is modernised, so that the human relationships, but also the humour, become clearer.

In this production director Runar Hodne suggests an evangelical church and preacher community in a Norwegian province in South West Norway, characterised by religion, nationalism and country music. Here the great ideals consist of God, the fatherland and the dream of America - here idealism, as well as fundamentalism, can grow.

This universe, the language and the intimacy of Malersalen move the theme of the play closer to us: How far does our involvement go? How much are we willing to let go of, for the sake of what we believe in?"
