Peer Gynt

Peer Gynt was a theatre production by Peer Gynt AS, performed outdoors by Lake Gålå, produced in 2013, and based on the play by Henrik Ibsen.

Svein Sturla Hungnes directed it and Dennis Storhøi acted in the title role.

This was the last year that Svein Sturla Hungnes was responsible for Peer Gynt at Gålå, and he directed two different versions of the play. In addition to Peer Gynt, Selvets keiser* (Emperor of the Self) was performed the same place.

Hungnes had been the director of Peer Gynt by Lake Gålå (Norwegian name: Gålåvatnet) for 25 years when he retired. For thirteen years he also acted in the title role.

At the webpage of Peer Gynt AS the following, among other things, was written about the 2013 version of Peer Gynt:

"In the anniversary year Svein Sturla will be directing two different productions of Peer Gynt by Lake Gålå.

The classical Peer Gynt by Lake Gålå, which 250 000 persons have travelled to see, will be performed for the last time with Svein Sturla Hungnes as its director during this year's Peer Gynt festival. Svein Sturla has for 25 years worked with Peer Gynt by Lake Gålå, and the production is unique in a Norwegian context. No other production has in Norway drawn guests to the mountains, out into nature, in sun and rain, the same way as Peer Gynt by Lake Gålå.

(...)

And it is here in the valley of Gudbrandsdalen that Peer Gynt has his origin. And that is why the performance seems so Norwegian to its root, and a response to where Henrik Ibsen himself would have liked to see the play performed."

Press coverage

Lillian Bikset, Tvisyn på Gynt (literally: Double vision of Gynt), Dagbladet, August 4 2013:

"Selvets keiser* (Emperor of the Self) examines Peer Gynt from within. Peer Gynt describes him from the outside. (...) Peer Gynt spins on Peer's outer journey, a cavalcade over his experiences, adventures and escapades. The text selection strengthens Ibsen's emphasis on Peer's time in the Gudbrandsdalen valley, his youth and old age. It is a fair choice, not just because we are in the valley, but because the time of his youth may work as an explanation to Peer's personality. Here are reasons why he experiences without acknowledging it."

The Dagbladet review discussed both productions of Peer Gynt by Lake Gålå 2013. For more about Selvets keiser, click here.
