Peer Gynt
Peer Gynt is a theatre production by The National Theatre, produced in 2014, and based on the play by Henrik Ibsen. The production was performed at the main stage.
Alexander Mørk-Eidem rewrote and modernised the text, and directed it. The version was put in a talk show setting, in which a 50-something Peer Gynt is confronted with the life he has led until then.
Eindride Eidsvold acted in the title role.
Peer Gynt received two nominations for The Hedda Award 2015 and won one of the awards. Alexander Mørk-Eidem won the award in the best stage text category for his version of the text. In addition, Nader Khademi was nominated in the best supporting actor category for the role of the groom and others.

The Hedda Jury gave the following reason for the award to Mørk-Eidem:
"How much is one allowed to change a classic text? The answer must be: As much as one gets away with. This year's award winner is gifted with a naughtiness with which he has changed, rewritten and added. This way he has made part of our national heritage his own, with a result that is madcap funny as well as bitingly satiric.
This year's best stage text award goes to Alexander Mørk-Eidem."
"The award-winning director (Alexander Mørk-Eidem) has written and modernized the text - but it still rhymes. We are in Norway in 2014. From the television studio, Peer recounts his story, accompanied by a number of Norwegian celebrities. As it turns out, the celebrities are also characters in the play.
Eindride Eidsvold plays Peer, a charming bastard who trades in weapons and human cargo. And as in any Skavlan show, a musical artist contributes. This is Solveig, played by singer and songwriter Amina Sewali. Throughout the show she performs both newly written material and well-known pop hits.
Mørk-Eidem wants to take back Peer Gynt, a play Ibsen never intended to be a celebration of the Norwegian character. Do we, in Norway in 2014, cultivate those aspects of Peer Gynt that Ibsen denounced: cynicism, selfishness and the pursuit of one's own success? In 2014, both Peer Gynt and Norway are having a mid-life crisis. Peer turns 50; Norway celebrates the anniversary of the constitution. Both have reached their goals: money, wealth and status. Now what? Does Skavlan have any surprise questions? Will Peer - and Norway - be caught with the pants down?"
Peer Gynt is one of The National Theatre's own productions performed during The Ibsen Festival 2014, but with its opening prior to the start of the festival.
