Our picture is continuous fractions

Our picture is continuous fractions is a scenic installation and a dance and music work by the composer Erik Dæhlin, the choreographer Therese Markhus and the stage designer Christina Lindgren.

They describe the project as follows:

"Imagine four bodies in a landscape. The landscape is a live image, built of several smaller images.

Listen to the sound of feedback produced by the bodies. The sun is nailed in one place. Imagine that the image is a test situation. It is unknown what has happened and what will happen.

But try to remember this: The memory is the sum of all these fragments."

Our picture is continuous fractions by Erik Dæhlin, Therese Markhus and Christina Lindgren is based on the idea that life is one total image lived through many smaller events. These events are stored in layers in the memory, but processed as continuously wandering and often surreal staging of the mind. This is the main thought behind the performance, in which there is a wish to create scenic reflection and contemplation around this.

According to the artists:

"The stage image consists of people and objects creating a landscape in which possible events have happened, will happen and happen.

Through examining this landscape a continuum of layered variations this 'live' image may contain is developed. The content springs out of the memory's relative relation to time and space expressed through music and movement. The sound and bodies in the landscape give each other continuous feedback, so that the image and the present are both constructed as a test system of past and future. The movement of the production is the image's movement through slow moments and possible events."

Imagine four bodies in a landscape. The landscape is a living picture – made by several smaller images.

Hear the sound offeedback produced by the bodies. The sun is nailed.

Imagine that the picture is an experimental arrangement. What has happened and what will happen is uncertain. But try to remember this. The memory is the sum of all these fragments.

«Our picture is continuous Fraction» is a dance and musical work, but also a tableau vivant – a dream landscape. We have based this project ona notionthat lifeas a whole constitutesa single image that is lived through many smaller events. These events are stored in the memory aslayers, butisbrought forth in memory as constantly changing (and often surreal)stagingsmixed with reality.

This is also the main idea behind the performance. The scenic imagecontainsboth persons and objects that form a landscape wherepossible thingshashappened, isgoing tohappenand is happening. Anexploration of this landscape evokesa continuum of layered variations that this living image cancontain. A content that originateson the basis ofthe relative relation between memory and time and space expressed through music and movement. The sound and the bodies in the landscape give each other constant feedback, as both the picture and the present time is constructed asaexperimental arrangement of past and future. The movement of the performance is the motion of the picture through slow moments andpossible narratives.

Our picture is continuous fractions was supported by The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (travel grant/performing arts).
