Henrik and Emilie is about an imagined relationship between the aging post-stroke Henrik Ibsen and the very young Emilie Bardach. The production had its Oslo premiere September 8 2006, during The Ibsen Festival.
In the prologue for the published book Henrik and Emile Niels Fredrik Dahl writes the following:
"It is also so that these last few years of Ibsen's life – he had stopped writing, he was ailing and he had troubles talking – are not given significance in the biographies. However it is possible to say that when he sat exhibited in the street of Arbins gate after suffering two brain strokes, he experienced the human drama of his life. Naturally, this can't be proved, but it is not impossible. Writing Henrik and Emilie has been extra challenging – also because I wanted to challenge the two who may have fictionalised Ibsen the most – Henrik and Suzannah Ibsen... Many plays are written about men who become kings. This play is about a king who becomes human."
