After changing the theatre law in 1996 the theatre administratively became a small metropolitan theatre in the municipality of Copenhagen. In January 2006 the municipality ended the contract with the institution Kanonhallen and transferred the venue to the theatre Kaleidoskop, which changed its name to K2. When the theatre Republique in 2008 took over the venue K2, formerly Kanonhallen, the last open venue in Copenhagen disappeared.
Kanonhallen functioned as an open stage, that is, a stage location for Danish experimental groups within theatre, performance and dance. In cooperation with KIT (Københavns Internationale Teater or Copenhagen International Theatre) it hosted festivals and visiting performances with similar international groups.
