BrassWind intends to raise the interest for originally written contemporary brass band music and to stimulate composers to write for brass bands. The main priority lies on Norwegian contemporary music, and half of the festival repertoire shall be works by Norwegian composers. The festival aims to be an arena where new music can be tested along with larger works for brass and wind bands.

The last 15-20 years Norway’s leading brass bands have reached a professional musical level. Norwegian amateur musicians are curious and open to a new and exciting repertoire. While one can see an international tendency of recycling old concert repertoire, the Norwegian brass band segment is not regarded as conservative as such.

This has resulted in a steady stream of new, originally composed musical works for brass bands as well as an increased interest in contemporary music in general and brass bands in particular. The BrassWind festival was received with open arms by a complete brass band movement. The Norwegian Band Federation (NMF) has referred to the festival as perhaps the most important innovation in the Norwegian brass band field ever.
