More

The national archive building was the headquarters for Gestapo (the secret German police) in the Southern Norway region during the war years 1942 – 45. During this time, the basement functioned as a jail and a place for interrogation.

April 9 1999 Stiftelsen Arkivet took over the then left building of the national archive. The jail cells and torture chambers have been reconstructed and the stories that played out in the basement have been illustrated through glass exhibition cases and life-sized puppets.

The main target group is youth. They are offered guided tours by people who in different ways are closely connected to the history of the archive building. In addition to the tour lessons within relevant topics are offered. The friend association Stiftelsen Arkivets Venneforening is responsible for the tours.

At the archive several central humanitarian organisations such as UN, Save The Children, Red Cross, the foundation neveragain.no, ARC-aid, C.I.S.V. and Amnesty International share offices. These participate actively in the activity.

A central part of Stiftelsen Arkivet's activity is connected to research and development. The research activity is related to the following topics: Democracy and human dignity, dialogue and conflict prevention, historical reflection and historical information.

An important area of priority is creating an international network of centres using history and art as a challenge and inspiration to reflection on peace and coexistence. Stiftelsen Arkivet has signed collaboration contracts with Robben Island Museum in South Africa and the former torture centre Tuol Sleng in Cambodia, both emphasising this in their activity.
