Rencontres Chorégraphique Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis originates back to 1969 when Jaque Chaurand, a former dancer, created a choreography competition for "new dance", then called Les Ballets pour Demain. This took place in Bagnolet and it was the birth of the Concours de Bagnolet.

In 1988, the competition took on a new international scale. In 1995, the competition was renamed Rencontres Choregraphique Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis and has been held annually since 2003.
