Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theatre)'s puppet collection(143)
Oslo Nye Dukketeater (Oslo New Puppet Theatre) is the oldest puppet theatre in Norway. The story started in 1953: it first appeared as part of Folketeatret; then, after Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theatre) was established in 1959, it played in several venues. In 1966 the theatre gained its own stage at Oslo Museum, and from 2003 it was localized in Trikkestallen in the Torshov area of Oslo. We are delighted to present a selection of puppets from Oslo Nye Teater’s comprehensive collection. The 143 figures in this gallery are a representative selection of different puppet types that the ensemble has used over the years.
Our retrospective look at 70 years of artistic activity has uncovered a history of excitement and drama – both on and off the stage. Artistic directors have come and gone, money has often been tight, and for many years the performers worked under very difficult conditions. Throughout its existence, Oslo Nye Dukketeater has developed artistically, meeting new challenges and in contact with numerous theatre professionals. The ensemble has delivered quality experiences to both young and adult audiences – and some of the productions are still in repertoire, many years after they were premiered.

We thank Oslo Nye Teater’s directors who have allowed us to select puppets from the archives. Two of the theatre’s performers, Marianne Edvardsen and Knut Wiulsrød, have contributed information about the puppets. We are grateful for their help and collaboration.
We wish you a happy journey into the history of Oslo Nye Dukketeater!
