Rampejentene ("The rascal girls")

Rampejentene ("The rascal girls") were among the characters in the television series Kometkameratene ("The comet comrades"), which was about nine aliens who are on their way to Earth in a spaceship. Their mission was to find out what people on Earth spend their time doing. Kometkameratene was created by the Swedish company BLA (Stockholm), in collaboration with NRK’s children’s television division NRK Super.

BLA has specialised in puppet theatre for television. BLA was responsible for the concept, script, direction and for the construction of the puppets. Petter Lennstrand from BLA was responsible for the concept and directed the production.

In total, 48 episodes of Kometkameratene were produced between 2008 and 2011.

More

Six "adult" and three young aliens (Rampejentene; "The rascal girls") were on their way to Earth in a spaceship. In each episode, two aliens were sent to Earth to investigate a human activity. They would explore the activity and communicate with humans before returning to their spaceship in order to discuss their findings with their colleagues, who would try to understand what the two emissaries had experienced.

The three girls on board were mischievous. They were too young to work, so they spent their time playing, sometimes causing trouble for the others on the spaceship. Like Zook they had no language, expressing themselves only through sounds. It is not known who played them.

Types of materiale

We have photographs of two of the rascal girls that look quite similar, but have some differences. One of them, Girl 1, had three long and bent hornlike protuberances on its head. They were made of tightly packed cotton-wool and covered in velour. The head was round, like a ball and made of pieces of foam rubber. The mouth was split, with two visible teeth. The eyes were two white circles with black pupils.

The body was cylindrical and the arms and legs were particularly long. Both the arms and legs were flexible and could be drawn through the body so that one arm or leg could be very long and the other short. These body parts were made of dark blue velour. The head and hands were made of longhaired muppet fleece. A rod was fixed to each of Girl 1’s hands.

Girl 2 was constructed in a similar way, from the same materials, but the colour of the body and legs was burgundy red. However, it had only one “horn” on the head, and only one of the hands was controlled by a rod, while the other was controlled by the performer’s hand. The arms and legs were thin at the top and wide at the bottom.

There is also a Girl 3, whose head had a large lower jaw and one “horn”. The arms and legs were small and not controllable. Girl 3 was green in colour.

Construction/technique

The puppets’ construction has already been described under "Types of material", but we repeat: Girl 1 was constructed with a "speaking" mouth (she was a muppet). She also had a rod fixed to each hand.

Girl 2 had a similar construction, but the hands were different from those of Girl 1. The performer could control the puppet’s hand (one hand at a time). The movements could therefore be larger and more precise, and the puppet can take hold of objects with its hand. The performer’s hand was camouflaged.
