"The world premiere of resident playwright Kathrine Nedrejord's Human Zoo is a historical collaboration project between The National Sami Theatre Beaivváš and The National Theatre.
From the beginning of the 1800es and until well into the 1900es selected tribes and native peoples, included Samis, were sent on tour in Europe and USA. In traditional clothing, with lavvo tents and reindeer, they were exhibited for curious onlookers in zoos.
In Human Zoo we follow a Sami family's journey from open prairies to fenced-in areas, increasingly narrow. The relationship between the mother and the father is difficult. The grandmother coughs to an alarming degree. The son is bothered by the spectators' glance. And the daughter asks questions the adults find hard to answer.
The more narrow the outer space becomes, the clearer the friction between the family members become.
Human Zoo is written by writer and playwright Kathrine Nedrejord. Nedrejord was born in 1987 in Kjøllefjord, the county of Finnmark, and she lives and studies in Paris. She is the third resident playwright in The National Theatre's history, after Arne Lygre (2014–2016) and Johan Harstad (2009–2011)."
