The Ocean of Silence

The story in The Ocean of Silence by Dekkoart regards the destiny of an astronaut.

The Ocean of Silence follows him on a mission discarding of satellites no longer in use, and further to landing on the moon to examine the left measuring instruments from former journeys to the moon. During this work something goes terribly wrong. The astronaut falls out of communication with Earth and loses the option to return. In his last lonely hours on the surface of the moon he discovers something which could have changed our whole way of thinking: All material has life.

The human being has in its research outside our globe the past 50 years left amounts of technical equipment, in space and on the moon after the space program. What happens to all this garbage after the batteries it is equipped with run out and the human can no longer use it? What if it has a soul? The performance searched to find the soul of all this garbage and to give it an abstract physical language of its own.

The visual and dramaturgic concept of The Ocean of Silence was to combine the narrative ways of the movie with the black theatre’s opportunities. By having the option to cut in time and to zoom in on singular actions Dekkoart was provided with the opportunity to tell a focused story. Dekkoart combined the use of a small puppet in the large images and an actor in the close-ups.
