"When an inheritance is to be split, an intense, destructive family conflict comes to light. For years, Bergljot has stayed a safe distance away from her family. She now gathers her courage and her strength to confront her mother and her sisters. She wants to tell them what happened when she was a child, but painfully experiences that some truths will not be tolerated.
Vigdis Hjorth's award-winning novel provides interesting perspectives on how we tend to carry with us different truths about the shared history. The novel has resulted in heated debate about the divide between truth and fiction. The strong story also handles secrecy and taboos, and it describes shame, betrayal and silence in a moving, brave manner."
