Sjøen* (The Sea)
Sjøen (literally: The Sea) (2010) by Ingun Bjørnsgaard Prosjekt was loosely based on Henrik Ibsen’s well-known play The Lady from the Sea (1888). Ibsen’s text is about one of the first modern women – a woman who, in her disregard for convention and search for modern forms of freedom, is subject to urges which are simultaneously dangerous, repellent and alluring.
*Not yet translated into English. The title within parentheses is the Norwegian title's literal meaning.

The fundamental themes in the text are also present in Bjørnsgaard’s work: ambivalence, vague yearnings, a desire to disappear, obscenity and superficial anxiety. But Sjøen by Ingun Bjørnsgaard Prosjekt also used humour and self-recognition to play with the illustrative attitude of literary dance and the complex self-absorption of abstract dance.
In Sjøen the subjective yearning for freedom was implemented in a current context: a time in which the self is perceived as a stream of many possible identities. What type of freedom is possible in a world where ambivalence reigns and self-contempt resides next door to self-aggrandization?
In the works of Bjørnsgaard human beings appear most beautiful and most human when they fail.
Sjøen by Ingun Bjørnsgaard Prosjekt was supported by Arts Council Norway and the Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs/MFA (travel grant/performing arts).
