Silent Island
Silent Island by Katma was an exchange project between young people from small islands in Scandinavia. The project started on Andøya, Norway, in 2002. So far, young artists from Iceland, Norway and the Faeroe Islands have been taking part in the project.
The summer of 2002 six Icelandic youths visited Andøy. With young people from Andøy, they went to the small island of Tinden in Øksnes. For three days, they managed without mobile phones, clocks, computers and TVs. They were far from people and lived in two old fisherman's shacks. They explored the particular transitions between sea and land, silence and isolation that the island reflected. On the island only they only used their senses. To document their observations they used pencils and notepads.
The audience got to see the results of this exploration in the shape of a wandering theatre performance in the forty meters tall lighthouse in Andenes.
In the summer of 2004 the young islanders met up again, this time around on Heiaey, Iceland. Altogether 23 young people from Norway, Faeroe Islands and Iceland travelled to the abandoned island of Bjarnarey, where they continued their exploration of silence. The result was a visual and poetic performance, staged at the local art school.
In the summer of 2006, The Faroe Islands, and the island Litla Dimun were next in turn.
Altogether 62 young artists have been involved in the international young-art project ”Silent Island” so far.
Silent Island by Katma was supported by The Nordic trust Cirius, the culture fund of Andøy, Norsk teaterråd, The Nordic Amateur Theatre Council and the regional council of Vesterålen, as well as the Icelandic and Faroese Islands trust.
