At the website of The Norwegian Theatre the following, among other things, is written about The Drunks:

"Through an eventful night in a European metropolis we meet different characters who have in common that they are all having a drunken night. They are, in short, very, very drunk. This, naturally, opens for a great deal of comedy, but The Drunks is not about the state of drunkenness. Drunk people have a tendency to talk without a filter. Through inhabiting a whole play with only drunk people, one can go straight to the very greatest issues of life, without fearing the banal or the pretentious.

(...)

That the characters are drunk makes them wear their emotions on their sleeves. They think bigger, more existential thoughts, they ponder. They don't censor themselves. They dare to say things they would normally have kept silent on, what they really think. They admit that they lack something 'true' in their lives. They miss love and intimacy. They break the social conventions, the taboos, and they talk about the most important things of all: The meaning of life. This leads some of them closer to one another throughout the night. Others confess to unfaithfulness. One other proves to be a real asshole. Some get married there and then. Is everything a lie, or does God indeed talk to us through the drunks?"

The Hedda Jury gave the following reason for the award to Per Schaanning:

"This year's winner is an actor who in many contexts has proven his ability to maintain the tiny little details in which mimicry and body language may be more important than the spoken lines. The form and the content of this year's production may tempt one into overacting, but this year's supporting actor chooses to go in the opposite direction, and through underacting the over-the-top and unlikely, while being appropriately discreetly in place, he conveys the absurd situations in an everyday manner, yet with great understanding and credibility."
