At the webpage of The National Stage the following, among other things, is written about When We Dead Awaken:

"Arnold Rubek is an aging sculptor who has returned to Norway for a summer stay after living many years abroad. He is travelling with his wife Maja, who is some years younger than him. They have been married for five years and the marriage does not seem to be happy. He brought Maja out of underprivileged home conditions and led her to a house by Taunitzer See in which they have lived in quiet and withdrawn wealth, but without anything to say to one another. Now they sit in the park near a Norwegian spa hotel and plan a journey along the coast. Rubek is forced to confront the choices of his life. Did he right in making his art his first priority?"
