At the webpage of The Norwegian Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Jeppe:
"When Ludvig Holberg wrote his comedy about Jeppe of the Hill in 1722, the political system was as much in crisis as Europe is today. Tyranny, hypocrisy, contempt for humans, suppression, lack of knowledge and homeless soldiers recently returned from war, and last, but not least, intoxication, this hunger for calming intoxication. All of this still exists.
The German playwright Lothar Trolle has moved the conflict and the core issues to our time and age. His version was written sometime during the early 1980es for Volksbühne (at the time in Eastern Berlin in the state of East Germany). The play was banned. Not too surprising, as Holberg's Master Erik became 'Uncle Erich' (Honecker). Now, strangely enough, it has its world premiere here at The Norwegian Theatre."
