Happy Days

At the webpage of Teatret Vårt (Our Theatre) the following, among other things, is written about Happy Days:

"Winnie is stuck in a mound of earth. Buried to her waist. Somewhere behind the mound in a cave is her husband. Supposedly. Even though it's been a long time since he last said something. The sun shines without mercy, but Winnie thinks it is a lovely day. She has her things in her bag. She makes herself up and goes through all the little rituals making her human, while she reprimands Willy, who has stopped caring.

Who is she talking to? In everything she does she expresses a longing to be seen, to be heard, to be loved: To be.

Winnie reflects upon her life, big things and small. A human life like any other. An unbroken movement from the cradle to the grave. Winnie may be halfway into it. The way she sits in her mound of earth. Half buried and midway into the struggle to keep her courage. And this she knows.

The human struggle for meaning in a meaningless existence is a fundamental theme in Beckett's writing. In his plays he creates situations in which everything is over. But at the same time his characters insist that everything continues, that there is hope. Within this contradiction burlesque comedy arises, scenes that filled with absurdity are liberating and laughter-provoking."
