At the webpage of The Norwegian Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Fiddler on the Roof (2014):

"Director and head of the theatre Erik Ulfsby and the rest of the artistic team has dug deep into the Yiddish tradition and the distinct Jewish Klezmer music to find inspiration for a colourful as well as contemporary expression matching Fiddler on the Roof while underlining the themes of the play. The simple and efficient stage design rips the story out of a folkloric past and into a more topical frame.

The Fiddler at the Norwegian Theatre
Fiddler on the Roof has been staged at The Norwegian Theatre twice before, in 1968 and 1987. The 1968 version was one of the greatest audience successes in the history of The Norwegian Theatre, with 284 performances and 130 906 visiting spectators. Touring Norway the next year the production was performed 51 times, and yet another 25 802 got to experience Lasse as Tevye.

Background
Fiddler on the Roof finds its material in the melancholy-merry stories of the Russian-American writer Sholem Aleichem. The stories about the real milkman Tevye, in an Eastern Jewish village society, was adapted for the theatre by Joseph Stein with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and music by Jerry Block. The piece had its world premiere at Broadway in 1964.

Sholem Aleichem
The writer Sholem Aleichem was born in Russia in 1859 as Solomon Rabinovich, and died in New York in 1916. He wrote stories in Yiddish, was a playwright and humourist. He is counted among the most original Yiddish writers and is known for his sad and ironic short stories and the stories about life in small, Jewish villages. Best known he is for the stories about the eternally optimist milkman Tevye and his five daughters, who are all old enough to get married."
