At the webpage of The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about King Lear:

"Shakespeare's masterpiece, the tragedy of King Lear, is the story about what happens to a king who wants to give up his responsibility, while holding on to his power and authority. He is one of the most egocentric, self-obsessed and despotic characters the author created. As a leader as well as a father, King Lear is a character who could just as well have existed today.

Lear decides to withdraw and to split all his belongings between his daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. But not equally. Who loves him the most is to get the most. Goneril and Regan will win their father's favour through flattering falsehoods. Cordelia, the youngest, takes the question seriously. She responds that she loves him the way a daughter is to love her father. Lear had not calculated with this, and he turns his favourite daughter out. The whole inheritance goes to the two oldest daughters, and their husbands, who from now on oppose their father-in-law. His authority as a regent is broken. The consequences are fatal. A materialist, decadent society goes under. The decline is total, and is reflected in Lear's relationship to his own values."
