The Gospel of Judas
Game of Sorrow
The Gospel of Judas is a production by Transiteatret-Bergen and Tore Vagn Lid, produced in 2013 in collaboration with BIT20 Ensemble, Ultima and The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet.
The Gospel of Judas is the third and final part of Tore Vagn Lid's Game of Sorrow trilogy.
The first mourning play was Punishment at Logen/Hordaland Theatre in 2012, the second Kill them all! at The National Theatre in 2013. The mourning plays have no "actors" and no "musicians", no "singers", but only players, or performers.
Inspired by the old board games' rules and narratives, the aim has been to find an expression reconciling a societal overview with existential insight, to seek the individual in the system and the system in the individual, and to seek contexts and rules that unite seemingly isolated and individual destinies in one and the same game.

At the webpage of Transiteatret-Bergen the following, among other things, is written about The Gospel of Judas:
"A few years ago the news went out to the world that there had been found fragments of a new Gospel. A shepherd by the river of Nile had found a scroll of bleached papyrus. On the last page, written on the last and thirteenth line, one could read: Ευαγγέλιον του - The Gospel of Judas.
This is the Gospeler - not the sinner - Judas Iscariot's own gospel.
This is the damned's own report. This is the scum and perpetrator of whole mankind, taking the word, witnessing about what no one ever could - or would realise: That Judas is the Hero - the One - taking on the Mission to betray his own Master so that the prophesy could be consummated.
The events - ‘the Kiss of Judas’, the capture in the olive garden in the night - are seen from within - from the two making the agreement. The only ones who knew the truth.
The problem of science, the incomplete aspect of the age old manuscript, the cryptic holes, sentences and passages partly extinguished through centuries of neglect and erosion, have created artistic opportunities; an invitation to thinking on, 'complete', confront. And where the other apostles have long ago had their art historical passions, cantatas and oratories, this is an attempt to let Judas talk. A concentrated fable - tight, profane and efficient - tells a contrapuntal story about the drama surrounding Judas and his master. When the gospel's central voice is turned upside-down, victims become executioners and executioners become heroes.
Step away from the others and I shall tell you the mysteries of the kingdom. It is possible for you to reach it, but you will grieve a great deal. For someone else will replace you, in order that the twelve may again come to completion with their god."
