Nils Gaup started his career as an artist as a trainee at The Arctic Theatre in 1974. As an established filmmaker, he returned to his old workplace with the production Déjà vu. The production was a thriller about violence and love. With short scenes, Gaup used a filmatic expression in the theatre. It was regarded as innovative in its day, a kind of theatre-film experience.

Edvard Hoem, date unknown, Dagbladet [Oslo]:
"The dialogue is lean, or one can call it thin. (...) But the concept, the claw. There is a layer in its action that is fully professional."
Janne Kjellberg, date unknown, Klassekampen [Oslo]:
"That Nils Gaup could give a lot to Norwegian theatre is without a doubt. His efficient, effectful dramaturgy provides rhythmic and light flow, and, not least, his attitude to the actors promises that he can contribute something new to Norwegian theatre."
