    More about Ylajali

Arne Nøst, the head of Rogaland Theatre, writes the following, among other things, about Ylajali, from the webpage of Rogaland Theatre:

"Then I saw that Jon Fosse had written Ylajali, freely based on Hunger, and I was excited to see what such a meeting between two great artists could result in. I became warm and happy when reading the artwork by Fosse, as this was no adaption, more an inspired image with Hamsun-like connotations to it, with new motifs and nuances, in another language than Hamsun's. Fosse has read Hunger in another way than I did the first time I read it, and to me it expands the text by Hamsun. I am happy to present our stage interpretation of Ylajali.

Ylajali, the unwinnable woman the young man projects his dreams upon, the ephemeral and beautiful, perhaps easing the young man's tragic situation, but also increasing the comedy and the height of the fall, for this hungry character out there, in the city hell."
