At the webpage of The Arctic Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Puntila:

"The local great Puntila owns woods and fishing villages. He is also in possession of a violent thirst, splitting him in two: When he is drunk he is a kind and considerate man, when he is sober he is a terrible tyrant. As he stumbles between the two extremities he destroys a lot for his workers, his friends and not least himself."
