Udhavn Teater (Udhavn Theatre) writes the following about Krotkaja - the Mild:
"Krotkaja - the Mild is a 40 year old degraded officer who has gone downhill in the St. Petersburg of the 1860es. He inherits some money from his aunt, invests in a pawnshop, and manages to obtain a certain success.
A 16 year old orphan girl comes to pawn some meagre objects. The pawnbroker takes advantage of her misery and manipulates her into marrying him.
After only a short time of marriage - during which the pawnbroker tries to surpass his inferiority complex in the relationship through what can be called a strategy of silence - she commits suicide by throwing herself out the window with an icon in her hands."
