Udhavn Teater (Udhavn Theatre) writes the following about Clarence Darrow: A One-Man Play:
"Darrow's best known case is the so-called Monkey Trial from 1925, in which he defended a teacher in Tennessee who had taught Darwin's theory of evolution. The trial was among the first major American media events, with direct radio broadcasts to all of the country. It got enormous coverage in Europe, too. The case has later been presented through the film Inherit the wind from 1960 with Spencer Tracy in the role of Darrow.
Darrow lived and worked in Chicago when industrialism (and capitalism) blossomed in USA, around the turn of the century from the 1800es to the 1900es. He started out as a business lawyer in The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company, but switched sides when the government decided to use soldiers against railroad workers in strike in Chicago in 1897.
He fought for freedom of speech and freedom of organisation, and against the government and capitalist harassment of the unions. He also fought the conspiracy laws of the US, and the repeated justice murders of political dissidents by the state. He is central in having had the eight-hour day made into law.
He was principally opposed to death penalty. Of the approximately 100 persons he defended, who risked capital punishment, nobody was sentenced to death.
He also got involved in the fight against racial discrimination. Clarence Darrow is one of USA's greatest humanists and civilisation builders."
