In Nothing's for something by Yukiko Shinozaki and Heine Avdal the foundation is that all the elements in a performance comment on each other in a non-hierarchic system, like nodes in a computer network - as in an interface.
Performer, technician and spectator, sound, lighting and stage design or video projection, and different objects, are all on equal footing come to significance. The audience needs to put together a user manual for the room while entering it. All of this may have been especially clear in the Field Works series, when the audience was invited into ordinary, semi-public spaces; a hotel room and an office landscape, in which there were made several small, but determining changes.
Traditionally art has presented things we liked to watch or wanted to see. As opposed to this, Nothing's for something takes hand of the process to reveal reality behind the visible world. The visible is only an isolated part of all there is, and the strength of art is that it may point out several latent realities. One may say that contemporary art neither is to be read nor understood, but that it is successful when creating energies. Inspired by the epoch-making Klee, who danced when he painted, by Rilke, the perfectionist of process and form, and the master of mundane wonderment, Perec, Nothing's for something will make the invisible forces of art visible. The production represents a lift in dimensions, and a re-orientation of originality in their own movement project, by creating a production for a larger stage room and more performers.
Avdal and Shinozaki have collaborated in several projects. Prior to Nothing's for something the most were Field Work - Office and - Hotel.
