Emilie and the Wild Mother

Emilie and the Wild Mother by Barske Glæder Productions: My mother looks like a big yellow cheese. I look like a little white larva. One thick and one thin. We suit each other, my mother and I both think so. My mother is a very nice person. There is just this one little thing about her: She isn’t like every other mother.

More

The worst thing Emilie’s mother knows is to clean the floors and to tidy up. She prefers to play and to kid around. But it isn’t too easy to have a mother your friends laugh at. Once, when Line and Lise are visiting, the mother acts extra embarrassing. That is when Emilie decides to run away from home.

An audio theatre version of Emilie and the Wild Mother is available on CD, published by NRK Aktivum.

The performance was based on Gro Dahle’s book by the same name, and is part of The National Touring Network for Performing Arts.

Emilie and the Wild Mother by Barske Glæder Productions was supported by Arts Council Norway, The Norwegian Actors’ Equity Association, The Audio Visual Fund, The Fund for Performing Artists and the municipality of Oslo.

Press coverage

"Too much of a pedagogue Emilie’s mother is not, she is more like a scary vision of the type of parent raising-the-children-on-their-own-terms. Personally I tokk the breakfast to heart, made with mother’s monster milkshake of milk, cocoa, jelly candy, ketchup, mustard, sardines etc. As did many of the children." Cathrine Paulsen (1997, 09). Dagsavisen

"Janne Langaas knows the art of addressing the smallest ones. With vivid mimicry, a sparkling narrative style and simple, but precise words she manages to communicate with her audience, in the parts of little Emilie and her impossible mother alike." IdaLoun Larsen (1997, 22.10). Nationen

"With song and stories Langaas guided the children through the story of Emilie and the hopeless, but kind mother. A warm, funny and slightly scary story to make you feel happy." Alexander Synstad (2002, 28.10). Røyken og Hurums Avis

"Janne Langaas kept the audience captivated. And the children sat silent as mice, paying her back through giggles and laughter. Theatre was fun." Karin Engh (2003, 15.02). Grimstad Adressetidende

"Janne Langaas immediately connected with the many children at Ringerike library Saturday morning, who had come to experience the performance Emilie and the Wild Mother. (...) Janne Langaas played the parts of Emilie and her mother in the play, and she had the children howling with laughter and gaping with horror." Wenche Nilsen (2005, 03.10). Ringblad
