In To historier fra Middelalderens Norge* (Two stories from Norway in the Middle Ages) Karen Høie is alone onstage, but she has brought two image-rich songs and stories from the Middle Ages in Norway. She build the stories on the ballads Åsmund Frægdegjeva and Agnus Dei, on impressions she has due to ornaments and woodwork, and the fairytale Jomfru Maria som Gudmor (literally: Virgin Mary as Godmother).
Åsmund is the hero who takes the daughter of the king home from Trollebotn in the cold north. Virgin Mary should be a known and beloved character – in the Middle Ages people found her present and she often acted as the friend and helper of the defenceless.
The story about Åsmund is told through the ballad bearing his name. The daughter of the king is in need and we follow Åsmund as he goes to Trollebotn to save her. Trolls and evil ogres and worst of them all is the one named Skumegygri. The audience is invited to partake in the singing of the refrains and some dancing steps towards the end.
