Exercising the Real: Immersion
Exercising the Real: Immersion is an installation by the German filmmaker Harun Farocki.
In April 2010 Wikileaks published a decrypted video from the American forces, filmed from one of two Apache helicopters in 2007. The video shows how soldiers in one copter kill a small group of people in a deserted urban landscape in Baghdad. One of the fatalities turns out to be the Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen, "armed" with a zoom lens.
Harun Farocki's two screen film Exercising the Real: Immersion happens to stand in post-relief to this event.

The film Exercising the Real: Immersion documents a variety of "immersion therapy" through which traumatised soldiers are to relive their experiences, retell them and act them out through advanced computer games.
The film was made in 2009 after a two day stay at Fort Lewis, Washington, where civilian therapists go through the computer program Virtual Iraq for military personnel having experienced traumatic events.
The patient, equipped with a joystick, headset and virtual reality glasses, navigates through desert landscapes and urban landscapes while being confronted with a therapist's systematic input of virtual ambush, screams and maimed persons.
Harun Farocki's Exercising the Real: Immersion was presented during the Prague Quadrennial project Intersection: Intimacy and Spectacle in 2011.
