The BFG and the troggle-humping

The BFG and the troggle-humping is a drama project by Lighthearted Adele, Bergen, in with it is worked with the book The BFG by Roald Dahl. The project started in 2006 and has been completed with pupils from a number of Bergen schools.

On the webpages of Lighthearted Adele the following is written about the project:

"Everything began the night little Sophie was unable to sleep:

In the moonlight Sophie caught a glimpse of an enormous long pale wrinkly face with the most enormous ears. The nose was sharp as a knife, and above the nose there were two bright flashing eyes, and the eyes were staring straight at Sophie.

Who is this giant who is abducting Sophie? And why are the other giants so cruel? In the project The BFG and the troggle-humping the pupils are provided with the opportunity to be actors and co-writers when we together take the jump into Roald Dahl’s book The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant) and adapt our own version of what is happening."

What The BFG and the troggle-humping by Lighthearted Adele is about:

1. Pre-project: Before anything else, the school receives a little presentation of Roald Dahl and his writings with one of the props from the performance to be played. The prop is hanged in the class room, without letting the children know what it is. In the period leading up to the performance one can also talk some about dreams, such as: What is it to dream, what do the pupils usually dream of, what consists a good dream and what is a nightmare?

2. Adaptation: The next week the main part of the project is to take place over three school periods. First a small performance is made, during which the first part of the book about the BFG is conveyed through storytelling theatre and puppetry. The pupils are next allowed to step in as performers. Through drama, theatre sports, acting technique and costumes different sides of being a giant are explored. The pupils go together in groups to create their own roles as evil, human-eating giants. Eventually a little sequence between the BFG and the giants based in the book is performed. After this the pupils are encouraged to read the rest of the book, with the promise that they will get a surprise in a mysterious envelope when they are done.

3. End: When the book is finished, the pupils are allowed to open the envelope. In it are photos of themselves from the adaptation and a cruelty diploma they can hang in the class room.

The aim of The BFG VK and the troggle-humping is to create a desire for reading in the pupils while stimulating their own ability to create.
