In the front surface of the original Volksbühne building the motto "Art for the people" was engraved. During the Second World War most of the theatre was completely destroyed. The architect Hans Richter designed the 1950-54 reconstruction, in which the exterior and, above all, the roof were greatly simplified. Since March 2009 the interior of the building is being extensively renovated: in addition to the construction of a new revolving and lifting stage, the upholstery as well as the wood panelling in the auditorium and the fire protection system was renewed. The reopening took place in November 2009.
