In Lars Mørch Finborud's book MOT DET TOTALE MUSEUM. Henie Onstad Kunstsenter og tidsbasert kunst. 1961-2011 (literally: TOWARDS THE TOTAL MUSEUM. Henie Onstad Art Centre and time-based art. 1961-2011) the following is written about the international festivals of Henie Onstad Art Centre:
"The management's strategy was to prepare popular, family-friendly events with avantgarde art to promote interest for art in new audiences. The festival idea was part of Sonja Henie and Niels Onstad's plans as early as 1961. The donators were clear that they did not want to join the cultural week epidemic spreading across the country, but that special concepts should be developed. They hoped that Høvikodden in the future could arrange a Scandinavian art biennial, an avantgarde festival and eventually host an international festival for the Oslo area."
