Haus der Kulturen der Welt

Haus der Kulturen der Welt (literally: The House of World Cultures) is a place for international contemporary arts and a forum for current developments and discourse. It presents artistic productions from around the world, with a special focus on non-European cultures and societies. Visual arts, music, literature, performing arts, film, academic discussions and digital media are all linked in an interdisciplinary programme. HKW brings together artistic and social relationships in a special network that extends throughout and beyond Berlin.

More

Haus der Kulturen der Welt is a building with exhibition hall, auditorium for concerts and theatre, congress hall, knowledge-production facility, academy, and is an architectural landmark.

The former Kongresshalle was built in 1957 as the American contribution to the international building exhibition. Due to its characteristic roof (which was rebuilt after collapsing in 1980), it was nicknamed "Schwangere Auster" (literally: The Pregnant Oyster) by the Berliners. One of the sculptures in front of the building was created by Henry Moore.

With respective focuses for spring and autumn, Haus der Kulturen der Welt makes tangible artistic and societal processes that are relevant to our globalized present. Worldtronics showcases international developments in electronic music. The summer open-air festival Wassermusik combines concerts on the river Spree with experiences and reflections around the theme of water. Literary series such as Wortwelten and the festival Lifelines, which focuses on the lifework of individual artists, provide further international accents. Numerous collaborative events including Transmediale are developed and presented in HKW. Two biennial events are held in alternating years: the performing arts festival In Transit and the Berlin Documentary Forum, with its emphasis on documentary practices across art disciplines.

Learn and experience offers a program of cultural education for all ages.
