Calixto Bieito

Calixto Bieito (born 1963) is a Spanish/Catalan theatre and opera director. He is married to actress Roser Camí, with whom he has often collaborated.

From 1999 and including 2010 he was the artistic director of Teatre Romea in Barcelona, for which the productions he directed include Shakespeare's Macbeth and King Lear, Brecht and Weill's The Threepenny Opera, Pedro Calderón de la Barca's Life is a Dream and Michel Houellebecq's Platform. At the same time he accepted commissions as a freelancer for other theatres and opera venues. Among other things he created a version of Hamlet for Birmingham Rep in collaboration with Edinburgh International Festival in 2003, and a version of Madame Butterfly for Komische Oper in Berlin in 2005.

After leaving his position at Teatre Romea, he founded Barcelona Internacional Teatre (BIT), a Spanish performing arts producing organsiation without a venue of its own, but with partner organsiations in a large number of countries. Bieito now splits his time between BIT and assignments as a freelance director.

Several Calixto Bieito-staged productions have visited Norway. His Peer Gynt, created for Teatre Romea, visited Bergen International Festival and The Ibsen Festival in Oslo in 2006, and a controversial version of Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio, produced by Komische Oper in Berlin, was performed during Bergen International Festival in 2007. His Voices, produced by The Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen, was performed during Bergen International Festival in 2010.

For The National Theatre of Norway he has directed Ibsen's Brand (2008, the opening took place during Bergen International Festival the same year) and Strindberg's A Dream Play (2014). For The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet he directed Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann in 2013, and his Carmen is to be performed in the same venue in 2015.
